Focus on the System, Not the Money
Welcome. This worksheet is designed to help you apply the powerful principle of emotional detachment. The goal is to shift your focus from the outcome (the money) to the process (your system of creating value). When you focus on what you can control—the excellence of your work—the money becomes a natural byproduct.
Part 1: Defining Your System
Your "system" is the unique way you create and deliver value. It’s your work, your craft, your service. Let’s define it.
1. What is the core value you provide to others through your work, business, or calling? (e.g., I help women feel confident through photography; I create beautiful, functional websites; I provide administrative support that creates peace and order.)
2. Who do you serve? (Who is your ideal client, customer, or audience?)
3. What are the key, repeatable activities that make up your "system"? (List 3-5 core activities. e.g., For a writer: 1. Daily writing practice, 2. Pitching new clients, 3. Editing and refining work, 4. Networking with other writers.)
- Activity 1:
- Activity 2:
- Activity 3:
- Activity 4:
- Activity 5:
Part 2: Identifying Your Emotional Triggers
Now, let’s identify when and how you get emotionally attached to money.
1. When do you feel the most anxiety, fear, or desperation about money in your work? (e.g., When a client is late on a payment; when I'm about to send a proposal with my prices; when I have a slow sales month.)
2. In those moments, what are the typical thoughts that run through your mind? (e.g., "I'm going to fail," "No one will pay this," "I'm not good enough," "I'll never make enough money.")
Part 3: Shifting Your Focus Back to Your System
This is where we put it into practice. Instead of dwelling on the money, you will shift your energy to actions you can control within your system.
1. Identify 3 practical, controllable actions you can take this week to improve or execute your system with excellence. These should be actions within your control, regardless of the immediate financial result.
-
Action 1: (e.g., Spend an extra hour refining my client onboarding process.)
-
Action 2: (e.g., Reach out to two past clients just to thank them and ask how they are doing.)
-
Action 3: (e.g., Dedicate 30 minutes to learning a new skill that enhances my service.)
2. Create a personal mantra or declaration to repeat when you feel emotionally triggered by money. This will be your anchor to pull you back to the truth.
Examples:
- "My focus is on my system. The money is a result."
- "I am a faithful steward of my craft. God is the steward of my provision."
- "I detach from the outcome and attach to my obedience."
Your Mantra:
Excellent work. By focusing on your system, you are acting in faith. You are trusting that as you diligently and excellently do your part, God will be faithful to do His.
